Asheville Community Theatre: "Peter and the Starcatcher"

  • 03/30-04/15
  • 7:30 pm-9:30 pm
  • Belk Theatre

There’s a brave young girl and a penniless orphan who doesn’t even have a name to call his own. There’s a ship full of pirates and a lagoon full of mermaids. And there’s a trunk filled with “starstuff,” a mysterious and powerful substance that could wreak havoc if it fell into the wrong hands.

Asheville Community Theatre and UNC Asheville’s Drama Department have teamed up to present the infinitely imaginative Peter and the Starcatcher. The play is written by Rick Elice with music by Wayne Barker and is based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Peter and the Starcatcher opens March 30, 2017 and runs through April 15, 2017 with performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Tickets are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, over the phone at 828-254-1320, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office. Remaining tickets will be sold at the Carol Belk Theatre on the campus of UNC Asheville, where the show will be performed.

Peter and the Starcatcher is a swashbuckling prequel to Peter Pan. Featuring 13 actors portraying more than 100 unforgettable characters – including the precocious Molly and the fearsome Black Stache as well as other creatures, doors, trees, and water – Peter and the Starcatcher is a playful and witty story of heroes, bravery, loyalty, and love.

The Asheville Community Theatre/UNC Asheville production of Peter and the Starcatcher is directed by Chanda Calentine. “This is a truly collaborative piece. From the actors to the crew to the designers, we’ve all had to work together extremely closely. I love that we really get to play. Rehearsing this show reminds me of being on a playground - letting your imagination run wild, trying all sorts of new things,” said Calentine.

The collaboration extends past the stage. Asheville Community Theatre’s Mainstage auditorium is currently under renovation and the theatre company thought that they would be unable to offer a spring production. That’s when Rob Bowen, UNC Asheville’s Chair of Drama, reached out to ACT with an offer to unite. UNC Asheville and ACT could partner on a Mainstage show, with rehearsals split between the two locations and performances at UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theatre.

"One of the missions of UNC Asheville is that we want to be engaged with our community and certainly the Drama Department works with theatres throughout Asheville, providing students and graduates to help this art form grow and expand for all community members,” said Bowen “We have been active with ACT for many years and many of our goals are the same."

Peter and the Starcatcher is performed by a cast that is mixed between community members and current students. The scenic and costume designers (Jill Summers and Carina Lopez, respectively) are both UNC Asheville graduates, as is Assistant Director Andi Espenshade. For these alumni, this production is an opportunity to team up with current students and former teachers. Current students are also participating as assistant stage managers and on the production crew.
