New Media Exhibition - "But First Some Rebellion"

  • 10/23-11/14
  • 9:00 am-6:00 pm
  • Zeis Hall - New Media Gallery (2nd floor lobby)

A select group of UNC Asheville New Media students will display new photographic and media works in an exhibition titled But First Some Rebellion. These works stem from the department’s recent Study Abroad program to London, Paris and Berlin which was led by faculty members Peter Kusek and Curt Cloninger. Rebellion runs Oct. 23-Nov. 14 in the New Media Gallery (Zeis Hall Lobby, 2nd floor).

Kusek provides this description:

Rebellion is based on two major themes: cities as physical systems we navigate with our bodies, and the concept of exile as a creative response. Informed in part by media theorist Vilem Flusser, who wrote in his essay Exile and Creativity, “If the cotton blanket of habit is pulled back, one discovers things.”

For many students, this was their first experience going abroad and I wanted them to use the experience of how travel recalibrates your brain to make work that couldn’t have happened if they had stayed in Asheville. My prompt for students was to capture images, sound and video as an outsider by rendering interpretations of their own experiences, rather than typical tourist photography.

Located on the second floor of Zeis Hall, the New Media Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. For more information, visit UNC Asheville’s Department of New Media website or call  828.350.4567.
